Dark, bold, and malty: deep molasses and toffee, the one that stands up to strong tea and dark bread. Pours like liquid amber: real raw buckwheat, never heated, never filtered.

Never heated: unpasteurized, and never warmed past the temperature inside the hive.

One crop, one region: single-source buckwheat blossom, Northern Ontario. Never blended.

Lab-tested every harvest: antibiotics, pesticides and glyphosate all come back non-detected.

Love it or hate it: the darkest, boldest honey we make. Worth knowing before you buy.

Certified Kosher: Standard Kosher.

Flavor Profile

Dark as strong coffee and just as bold: deep molasses, toffee, and a malty finish that lingers. This is the honey people mean when they say honey should  taste  like something. Reviewers call it  “the one you can actually taste in your tea.”

At its best against big flavours: strong black tea, dark rye and sourdough, aged cheese, glazes and marinades, or stirred into winter oatmeal. Not the mild table honey. The one you reach for on purpose.

Ingredients

100% Canadian Pure Buckwheat Honey.

Texture & What to Expect

It pours  dark, thick, and liquid : closer to molasses than to the pale table honey most people know. That deep mahogany colour is the buckwheat itself, not caramel or additives: raw, unheated, unfiltered, exactly as it left the comb.

Over time raw honey can begin to granulate. That’s a sign it’s real, not a fault. If yours firms up, stand the jar in warm water for a few minutes and it loosens right back to a pour. And because it’s a  single annual harvest , the depth shifts a little year to year, so your jar is unique to this season.

Because nothing is filtered out, you may spot fine traces of  beeswax, pollen and propolis : that’s not sediment, it’s the hive. And because it never gets heated, the natural enzymes stay intact instead of being cooked off.

Where it comes from

Buckwheat honey gets its colour and character from a single crop: bees working fields of buckwheat blossom, and nothing else in the jar.

The flowers themselves are white. It’s the nectar that runs dark, and that’s where the colour comes from, not from any processing. We put the hives in the middle of large buckwheat fields rather than at the edges, which is why ours pours darker than most buckwheat honey you’ll find.

Single-source and never blended. From organic buckwheat fields in Northern Ontario, the same family operation as our Wildflower, three generations since the 1970s.

What Independent Research Says

Published findings on buckwheat honey as a food, from independent researchers, not from us. We sell honey, not medicine.

Among the highest antioxidant levels of any honey

A University of Illinois study (J. Agric. Food Chem., 2003) found buckwheat honey taken with tea raised antioxidant levels in participants, and a later review of honey research put buckwheat at the top of the range for antioxidant content. That’s what the colour is telling you: the polyphenols that make it near-black are the same ones being measured.

How it compares to Manuka

If you came here from Manuka: published comparisons have measured buckwheat honey’s antimicrobial activity at or above Manuka’s in some assays. Manuka has a rating system (MGO) and buckwheat doesn’t, so there’s no like-for-like number to quote, but the research doesn’t put buckwheat a tier below.

The cough study people ask about

A trial published in Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine compared honey against an over-the-counter cough suppressant and found honey did better on nighttime cough severity and frequency. It used buckwheat honey specifically, which is why it keeps coming up.

This is research about buckwheat honey generally, not a claim about what this jar will do for you, and not medical advice. Never give honey to a child under 12 months.

Questions (7)

Is it pasteurized?

No. Unpasteurized and never heated above the natural temperature of a beehive. Yours arrives exactly as it left the hive.

Why is my honey so dark? Is something wrong?

Nothing’s wrong. Buckwheat honey is naturally near-black. The deep colour comes straight from the buckwheat flower, not from processing.

What does “single-source” mean?

Every jar comes from one buckwheat harvest and one family operation, never blended with honey from other locations or producers.

Is the container BPA-free? Is the honey gluten-free?

Yes to both. The packaging is BPA-free, and honey is naturally gluten-free.

Will my jar look different from my last one?

It might, and that’s a good sign. It’s a single annual harvest, so colour and thickness shift a little year to year.

Is buckwheat related to wheat? Is it gluten-free?

No relation. Despite the name, buckwheat isn’t a grass or a grain at all. It’s related to sorrel, knotweed and rhubarb, so it’s naturally gluten-free.

Is honey safe for babies?

No. Never give honey to a child under 12 months, raw or pasteurized. That’s a standard infant-botulism precaution and it applies to all honey, from every producer.
