Raw and unprocessed: not heat-treated, not ground, not blended.

One ingredient: bee pollen, and nothing else in the jar.

What it is
Before you buy. Bee pollen is a common allergen. If you have a pollen allergy, asthma, or you react to bee products, do not take it without asking a doctor first. Start with a few granules rather than a spoonful, and stop if your mouth or throat tingles or swells.

One ingredient: bee pollen. Nothing added and nothing taken out.

A foraging bee packs pollen into baskets on her back legs, binds it with a little nectar on the way home, and carries it back to the hive. Pollen is the colony’s protein: the honey feeds the flight muscles, and the pollen feeds the young. What is in this jar is that, collected at the hive entrance.

Raw and unprocessed, which for pollen means it has not been heat-treated, ground or blended with anything.

How to Use it

A teaspoon is the usual amount. Most people start with less than that for the first week, which is also the sensible thing to do if you have never had it before.

Over yogurt, oats or into a smoothie, where it softens slightly. Stirred through honey. Into muffins, pancakes or energy bars if you are baking with it.

It does not dissolve. It stays as granules however long you stir, so it works better  on something than  in  something.

What to Expect

Small dry granules rather than a powder, and a range of colours in the same jar: pale yellow through to deep orange and almost brown.

The colour depends on which flowers the bees were working that week, so one jar does not look like the next. That is the honest sign of a single-origin harvest rather than a blend, which is uniform by definition.

The taste is floral and faintly bitter, closer to a dried flower than to honey. Slightly chewy once it picks up moisture. Some people take it straight off the spoon and others would rather not.

Where it Comes From

100% Ontario, Canada.  Locally harvested and never imported.

Because the colour and flavour follow whatever was in bloom, a jar from a May harvest and a jar from a July harvest are visibly different. Blended pollen from several countries is uniform, and uniformity is the thing to be suspicious of here.

Questions (6)

What are the possible side effects? The one that matters is allergy. Bee pollen can cause a reaction in anyone sensitive to pollen or to bee products, and those reactions range from itching to serious. If you have asthma, hay fever or a known bee allergy, speak to a doctor before taking it. Start with a few granules.

Is this bee bread? The two names get used interchangeably, and strictly speaking this one is bee pollen. Bee bread is pollen the bees have already packed into the comb and left to ferment. This is the pollen itself, collected at the hive entrance before it gets that far.

How much is in the jar? 150 g, which is roughly a month at a teaspoon a day.

Is it imported? No. It is harvested in Ontario and never imported.

Is it raw? Yes. Raw and unprocessed, not heat-treated and not ground.

How should I store it? Sealed, somewhere cool and dry. It picks up moisture from the air and goes clumpy if you leave the jar open.
