What is in it

Before you buy. Calendula is a marigold, in the same botanical family as ragweed and chamomile. If you react to those, patch-test on your wrist before regular use. Contains beeswax, so it is not vegan.

Six organic ingredients in the unflavoured stick. The flavoured ones add organic essential oil, and nothing else changes.

Organic sunflower oil, the base. Light, and absorbs quickly for an oil.
Organic beeswax, what makes it a balm instead of an oil, and what keeps it sitting on your lips instead of soaking straight in.
Organic coconut oil, softens the wax so the stick glides at body temperature rather than dragging.
Vitamin E, an antioxidant. It is there to stop the oils going rancid, not for your skin.
Organic rosemary extract, a second natural antioxidant doing the same job.
Organic calendula extract, a marigold infusion that has been going into balms for a very long time.

No artificial flavour. No artificial colour. No petrolatum and no mineral oil, which is why it behaves differently from a drugstore stick.

How to Use it

Twist up two or three millimetres, no more. It is a small stick and it goes further than it looks like it will. Push up too much and the top snaps off, which is the single most common way people waste one.

It softens at body temperature. Straight out of a cold coat pocket it will feel firm, and it turns glossy after a few seconds against your lips.

Most people go through these in winter. A stick in the coat and a stick by the bed is the usual arrangement.

What to Expect

Firmer than a drugstore balm, because there is no petrolatum in it. Plant oils and beeswax set harder. Give it a moment to warm rather than pressing harder.

You will notice a faint beeswax smell underneath the flavour. That is the wax itself, not a fragrance added on top.

In real heat it softens. Left on a dashboard in July it will slump inside the tube. It sets again as it cools and there is nothing wrong with it.

The Three Flavours

Unflavoured. Six ingredients and nothing for scent. The one to pick if you wear perfume, or for anyone who does not want to taste their lip balm.

Citrus. Organic essential oils of orange, lemon and lime. It smells like peel rather than like candy, which is the difference between essential oil and flavouring. The orange and lemon are cold-pressed peel oils and the lime is distilled, which is simply how citrus oils are made.

Eucalyptus Mint. Organic essential oils of peppermint and eucalyptus. Cooling, and the most noticeable of the three by some distance.

Is the box of 12 a mixed box? No. Each box is twelve sticks of one flavour. Pick the flavour first and the box option second.

Is it vegan? No. Beeswax is the second ingredient and it is what makes the balm a balm.

Why is it firmer than the balm I usually buy? Most drugstore sticks are built on petrolatum, which stays soft at any temperature. This one is plant oils held together with beeswax, and those set harder. Warm it for a second rather than pressing harder.

What is calendula doing in a lip balm? It is an infusion of marigold petals and it has been a standard balm ingredient for generations. It is also the ingredient most likely to bother you if you are sensitive to ragweed or chamomile, which is why it is called out at the top of this page.

Will it melt in a bag in summer? It can soften. It will not leak out of the tube, and it firms up again once it cools.
